For fans of Stephen King, Blake Crouch, and Michael Crichton comes a new, heart-pounding thriller by Brett Battles.
Daniel Ash wakes after midnight to the cry of his daughter. Just a bad dream, he thinks. She's had them before. Yet he can't help but worry when she cries out again as he pads down the hallway. Stepping through her doorway, he expects to find her sitting up in bed, frightened by a nightmare. But the nightmare is his. It's real. And it's just beginning....
Something is burning Ash's daughter alive. Something horrible that is spreading beyond the walls of their home, and taking no prisoners. Thirty seconds later, Ash will discover his daughter isn't the only one in his family infected, and as his world spins, coming apart at the seams, a team of armed men in biohazard suits bursts into his house. But these aren't the good guys. They haven't come to save Ash's family. They've come to separate them, to finish what they started. The problem is, Ash refuses to disappear. He wants only one thing to find those responsible. Because humanity is on the brink of execution. And man is pulling the trigger.

I have enjoyed Battles novels to date and 'Sick' is in his familiar thriller/action genre. But it lacks the compelling something that envelopes his Quinn series. Here, the formulistic nature of the plot is more exposed, with a clear cut good guy, shadowy bad guys and "are they/aren't they" other guys brought together in a conspiracy theory of global proportions. It moves along at a goodly pace and there are fights and mysteries and the obligatory cliff hanger ending, but some aspects, such as the pedestrian dialogue and how the "are they/aren't they" guys hide away from it all with the apparently omiprescient bad guys not able to track them down that meant overall I am not that excited.I will likely buy the next one to see if things improve but even that is not certain, which is not at all what I was expecting.

Sick A Project Eden Thriller (Audible Audio Edition) Brett Battles MacLeod Andrews Audible Studios Books Reviews
This is a book I got for free as a download well over a year ago and just got around to reading. The author has put a number of his books up for free, probably as a promotional means. I have read at least one of his other books.
This one is your basic conspiracy book. Some shadowy organization is up to no good. They somehow arrange for a group of Army officers and their families to be exposed to a deadly virus. The main character in this story, Captain Ash, turns out to be immune to the virus, as does his son and daughter. his wife succumbs, and the captain and his children are taken captive by the shadowy organization behind the plot.
The captain' s usefulness being at at end, the shadowy organization decides to off him, but just in time another shadowy organization saves him.
There is a bunch of mostly implausible stuff that goes on as the captain and his new friends try to rescue his kids while a viral epidemic spreads throughout the desert in Southern California.
It's not a real long book, but it is full of mostly decent action. The conspiracy itself is sort of dubious. It is eventually revealed that the good shadowy organization has found out the bad shadowy organization wants to kill off all but about 10 million of the world's population. It is not a perfect book, but it was fun to read and did not have a bunch of writing errors in it as plagues so many self published works, so it got 4 stars from me.
If you like his Jonathan Quinn novels (which I do) you may not find this as crisp and insofar as there are like seven in this series which as post-apocalyptic novels go is far from compelling. It is kind of the opposite of the Wayward Pines series by Blake Crouch and more like a James Bond novel of some crazy people trying to start the human race over again. Makes it kind of hard to swallow such a premise. I think I will restrict my Battles reading to Jonathan Quinn novels and hope he does not stop writing them.
I am so glad I did not delete this E-book from my . For some reason I thought it was a Zombie book that I accidentally downloaded, but it definitely was not.
This story has conspiracy theory written all over it. Whenever I tried to describe the storyline of this book to anyone while I was still reading it, I would be (sometimes) rudely interrupted with, “That sounds like something that happened to a friend of mine, although it was not as drastic as that.” I would then have to listen to the conspiracy theory this person came up with to explain that ‘certain incident.’
Captain Daniel Ash is at the center of a government sanctioned experiment gone horribly wrong. All the residents of a small subdivision (Baker Flats) in Sage Springs, California are subjected to an airborne, lethal, man-made, virus. Of the sixteen families exposed to the killer virus known only as KV-27a, Daniel and his two children are the only survivors because of some unknown immunity they possess.
The morning before Daniel is to be exterminated and dissected like some guinea pig, he is miraculously saved from the abandoned military compound that his cell (#57) was located in.
When Daniel learns that his children (Brandon and Josie) have been moved and are still alive after his escape, he vows to find them with the help of his new friends who helped him escape certain death.
There are a few side stories in this tale that help explain the bigger picture of the ‘gone horribly wrong’ aspect of this dangerous military sanctioned experiment. These stories include innocent people and/or their family members who get caught up in being exposed to or otherwise affected by this deadly virus.
The group responsible for developing and testing the KV-27a virus has a sinister agenda that includes reducing the world’s human population from 7 billion to only 10 million individuals. This group fears that the exponentially growing human population will become too numerous for the earth’s shrinking resources to support.
In this first book of the Project Eden series, the characters continue to develop as the story grows. The pace of the novel is fast, the storyline is very believable, engrossing, and is quite capable of making the reader consider if this is a possible conspiracy in the making somewhere out there.
Science Fiction/Conspiracy Theory/Thriller/Mystery/Suspense, and Post-Apocalyptic genera lovers will enjoy this title.
Self published book that was a quick read. Compelling plot about a shadow govt entity that is creating a plague flu virus in order to thin out the earth's population, by 99+%. In one of their test applications one man and his two children have immunity to the bug. The man is active duty Army and all the other deaths in this "test" are also Military families. The man gets spirited away but is initially told his kids died. The books premise is the fight between this man and the organization that help him and the bad guys. It's a fast paced, easy quick read. One knock is the surgery the hero goes thru to become unrecognizable. After getting said surgery there really seems to be no reason for him to have gone thru it in the long run. Also the characters are somewhat one dimensional. All in all a nice little story..
I have enjoyed Battles novels to date and 'Sick' is in his familiar thriller/action genre. But it lacks the compelling something that envelopes his Quinn series.
